Fashola inaugurates new school, promises N4m maintenance allowance for schools -

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has said every public school in Lagos State will henceforth receive no less than N4 million each as annual maintenance grant.

Fashola made this known in Lagos, on Tuesday, at the formal commissioning of a block of 18 classrooms at Ayedere Ajibola Senior Secondary School in Ketu, Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Area of the State.

The governor also pointed out that graduates of vocational schools will be given the opportunity to put their skills to good use by employing them to maintain the schools.

Fashola commended teachers in the state for their selfless efforts in moulding the lives of the students, stressing that the Lagos State government would continue to make the welfare of teachers its priority. He averred that the welfare of teachers includes a conducive working environment where they can proudly receive visitors which in his opinion elevate the teaching profession as well as the self esteem of the teachers.

He stated that the state government is committed to the training and empowerment of youths by providing an enabling environment for them to attain their full potential in life.

Fashola added that the school, which is one of twenty four schools that have been completed and ready for commissioning within the last few months, underscores the commitment of the state government to put in place not just infrastructures but a totality of other requirements to help teach the students survival skills by training them so that they can become self employed and employers of labour.

Earlier in her an address of welcome, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye thanked the governor for his support, counseling, approval and for being a listening governor just as she urged the students to take adequate care of the school.

In his own remarks, the Chairman of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos State Chapter, Mr Adesegun Raheem expressed his appreciation to the governor, who he said has met with the NUT at four different occasions culminating in the approval of the balance of 11.5 per cent allowances of the teachers by the state Executive Council.
